In memoriam Peter Hermann: Werkself player 1976 - 1984 | interim head coach in 1996
2 days ago
In memory of Peter Hermann, who passed away on September 19, we look back on his contributions to Leverkusen over the past 50 years. In 1976, the former midfielder joined Bayer 04 as a player—and went on to make history: a hero of the promotion run, his first Bundesliga appearances, and crucial goals that helped the team avoid relegation. He recorded 216 games and 32 goals during his eight years as a Werkself player. In the spring of 1996, the longtime assistant coach took the reins and, as interim coach at the end of a dramatic season, Peter Hermann led the Werkself to avoid relegation. The name Markus Münch will forever be linked to that escape from relegation — partly because Peter Hermann was always pointing to the players Markus Münch and Rudi Völler when asked about this pivotal moment in Bayer 04’s history. The match versus 1. FC Kaiserslautern on matchday 34 in the 1995/96 season was the final one of Völler's career. Peter Hermann went back to being one of the best german assistant coaches ever after securing the Bundesliga spot for Bayer 04 as interim coach.
